Indigenous Languages matter for development, peace building and reconciliation

"Indigenous languages in the global village, more than just a case of survival"

The United Nations declared 2019 The Year of Indigenous Languages (IY2019) in order to raise awareness of them, not only to benefit the people who speak these languages, but also for others to appreciate the important contribution they make to our world's rich cultural diversity.

Languages play a crucial role in the daily lives of pe
ople, not only as a tool for education, communication, development and social integration, but are also at the heart of each person’s unique identity, cultural history and memory. But despite their immense value, languages around the world continue to disappear at an alarming rate.

The United Nations chose to dedicate a whole year to encourage urgent action to preserve, revitalise and promote the importance of indigenous languages in the global village. While indigenous languages may not be the most widely spoken, they are the most numerous of the worlds languages. The International Year of Indigenous Languages aims to focus attention on the risks confronting indigenous languages, especially those significant for development, reconciliation, good governance and peace building. It aims to improve quality of life, wider international cooperation and visibility and strengthened intercultural dialogue to reaffirm the continuity of indigenous languages and cultures.

Greater use of indigenous languages means a greater chance of their survival. Losing a language is more than just losing words, it is a loss of unique cultural perspectives and narratives contained within the language and culture, along with its contribution to the richness of diversity.

My 2nd Grading Reflection

Second Grading Period has come to an end. It's just so fast that I didn't even noticed it's time for the Periodic Exam again. After this, we will have our most awaited Sembreak and then, we will start a new quarter again; all back to zero. Well, in this quarter, there were so many things we have done and achieved.
In ICT IV, we had a lesson which is very new to me. It’s about HTML Tags and in this grading period, we worked mostly on our exercises. I addressed my problems with the help of my classmates especially with my teacher. When I'm having trouble where to locate the tags they are the whom I seek for help and I'm very thankful because they are willing to help me out. We’ve finished 10 and I really learned a lot. It’s so fun and enjoyable to do those exers, I just hope I can apply it in the future for it is so important.

All in all, Second Grading Period is a busy time. But I’m glad because in here, I was able to experience many unforgettable moments: either good or bad memories. And most especially, I learned many important lessons and I look forward on the next two periods that I will be able to eliminate my idleness and clumsiness. In short- I will strive harder so that those awful things which happened in this period will never happen again.

Campus Recreation

Every year, our school Ilocos Sur National High School celebrates its annual Intramulars in which all the students were grouped into six teams per grade level. This year, the Intramurals was last held on September 13-14, 2019.

For me and based on my experience, intramurals is the time where you get to know other people better and where you get to make new friends in your divison or cluster because earlier during the semester as a freshman, you aren't really given the chance to do so. Also, during the events, your inner determination is being brought out, as well as teamwork and cooperation. I noticed that there were some controversies and the competition was very heated. This cannot be avoided in any competition. it just shows how much school spirit we have, and how determined we are to win. It also shows that if your team is till standing strong despite controversies, it means that your team has truly captured the essence of unity.

Overall, so many lessons and values can be learned from intramurals and the activity had been very tiring yet a memorable one. I am glad that most if not all schools practice this event annually. It only promotes health and fitness but values as well. We learn values such as: teamwork, unity, loyalty, cooperation ,humility, determination and many more. The intramurals plays a big part in a student's life.

Building A Positive School

✨We believe that our schools need to be a hub for positivity; where you feel safe and free to be yourself.✨

A growing body of research shows that school climate strongly influences students' motivation to learn and improve academic achievement. When school members feel safe, cared for, valued, respected, and engaged learning increases. Schools that provides students with support to meet these basic needs allow them to grow socially and emotionally and avoid problems ranging from emotional distress to drug use to violence, in addition to helping them achieve something.

DepEd Region 1 launches "Happy Schools Movement", this program aims to promote that every school should be a better and enjoyable place to learn. Fostering a child friendly atmosphere among the students. It also advocates to create an environment where students can freely express themselves and promote learning in an easy yet effective way of learning. Happy Schools Movement does not only concern learners but also the teachers and the school administrator. Happy teachers build in a happy environment and mold happy learners.

School heads on the other way around also play vital roles in this advocacy. They should serve as key to unlock the door and transform schools into a Happy School. Happy School Movement is indeed a very promising transformative advocacy to our schools. The students are the center of the educative process. They should be treated like a very expensive vase that once it falls, it will break. They should be treated fragile. If we create a happy and friendly school, all the students will be very excited every time they go to come to school. Students must not wake up and think, "I have to go to school today." Instead we want them to wake up and think; "I get to go to school today," because it's your school, and you must feel happy.

And if this happens, it will be more fun in schools, no students will be left behind  anymore and what a wonderful world would it be!

Wikang Katutubo Ating Pagyamanin
