Kannawidan: a feast of rich heritage and culture

Ilocos Sur is a province rich in culture that represents the ancient Spanish and Filipino heritage. To show and share their treasures to the whole world, the locals conceived a festival that highlights these cultural traditions and they called it the “Kannadiwan Festival”.

It is a great advantage to the province of Ilocos Sur to be blessed with a rich heritage. Centuries of cultural exchange endowed us with customs and traditions that give distinction to the Ilocano culture. These are the reasons behind the conceptualization of the "Kannawidan Ylocos Festival". It aims, among others, to underscore the importance of pre-serving the people's rich culture and traditions, as well as to promote the province's products, which are mostly agricultural. This became an annual festival that aims to create awareness on the preservation of the province' rich cultural heritage, practices and traditions, and a showcase of the different agriculture and industry products. It is very significant to every resident in the province as we are celebrating the foundation of Ilocos Sur as a province by virtue of the Royal Decree signed on February 2, 1818.

Kannawidan has really lived up to its mission and vision: preserving and perpetuating the rich Iloco cultural, artistic, historical and intellectual heritage. Kannawidan gatherings have always been a venue for Ilocanos, relations and friends, sharing and exchanging thoughts, views and insights on how to preserve and perpetuate the beautiful customs and traditions. May this continue and we, Ilocanos must work as one in the spirit of unity, to love our own culture and arts. We must be do these things always, not only during festivals. Ilocos Sur is an amazing, wonderful, magnificent place! Be proud you're an Ilocano!

Change Starts With You

“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” — Leo Tolstoy

Change happens whether we like it or not and regardless of whether we do anything about it. Tomorrow will be different than today. We can resist, but that is a bit like standing in a river and trying to hold back the water – useless. We have a choice to watch change passively happening around us, or to participate and lead it.

If you want to change reality start with yourself first and attend to your own personal development. In doing so, problems give way to solutions and no longer affect you. The goal I'm currently striving for this year is to make this world a better place to live in by starting the changes in myself. Sure, I've had bad experiences in my life too, but this is exactly what made me the way I am now: grateful, full of love, with a desire to study well because it will help me become a successful person in the future and have a high quality of life.

We can lead change and make our world a better place if we start with ourselves. Learning to become a better spouse, parent, businessperson, leader, salesperson, philanthropist, coach and volunteer will enable me to contribute more to my family, my community, and my industry. By inviting positive change into my life, by initiating change, I might be able to positively influence others.

Vigan City Fiesta

The biggest secular festival is the Vigan Town Fiesta, a week-long celebration consisting of carnivals, parades, musical extravaganzas, beauty contests and nightly cultural shows. It culminates on January 25 with the celebration of the conversion of St Paul the Apostle, the town’s patron saint. Before his conversion, St. Paul was known as Saul, a zealous persecutor of Christians. After he was touched by a personal encounter with Jesus Christ on his way to Damascus, his name was changed to Paul and he endured a lot of hardships and danger to spread the word of God to far places.
Vigan’s main church, the Metropolitan Cathedral is dedicated to St. Paul and it stands at the core of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia. The major Catholic educational institution in Vigan that stands beside the church is also dedicated to the patron, the St. Paul College of Ilocos Sur. The Vigan City Fiesta usually lasts for several days. It includes within the period the celebration of the anniversary of the cityhood of Vigan, which is commemorated every January 27.
Biguenos from all over the country and even abroad return to Vigan, as it is the custom of Filipinos to return to their hometown to join their family and friends in the celebration of their fiesta. They are joined by thousands of visitors from other parts of the Philippines and other countries in enjoying the cultural shows, parades and street dancing prepared by the local government with the help of the local industries and communities. There are also food fairs, arts and crafts exhibits, as well as a visiting carnival.

New Year, Love Yourself!

Another year has passed and come. Time flies so fast that I can't believe we're already in new century again. My mind is still stuck by the memories I had last year. I must say that there are good things to be celebrated and there are also bad things that needs to be filled in. I did encountered a lot of troubles but i found ways in order to fix it. I experienced a lot of problems that helped me to overcome my fears because of that I gained many lessons that I might need all throughout making decisions in life.

New year, that doesn't mean you need to change yourself for good it means you gotta be the new better version of yourself. I need to filled in my shortcomings and be good in all the thing that I will be doing. I promised myself that I will do my best to do good things only and avoid doing bad things. I will do whatever makes me happy and won't be affected by other people's negativity. I will keep going and moving forward even when I fail, to use my obstacles as a way to grow and always be grateful for the little things in life and always remember to thank God first before anything else. I will love myself even more than ever this year.
